I get it. You're probably thinking to yourself.... "I know I should get more organized but I don't have the time, energy, headspace to do it... at least right now." I hear this time and time again with so many people. So if you're feeling this way please know that you are not alone.

Decluttering and organizing ARE overwhelming even for a seasoned pro like me. There have been many times where I see a spot in the house and get the anxious feeling in my stomach. Like I should do something about this area but not sure what I can do about it or how I can finally get it organized.
But getting your ducks in a row will provide a lot of benefits both in your day-to-day, time management, your pocketbook and your mental health. Below are some reasons why you should finally get organized (and some tips on how to actually get started).

15 Reasons to (finally) Get Organized
Organizing your home offers a wide range of benefits, both practical and psychological. Here are several big reasons why you should consider organizing your home:
Improved Productivity: An organized home helps you find things more easily. You spend less time searching for lost items, which can make your daily routines and tasks more efficient.
Reduced Stress: Clutter and disorganization can lead to stress and anxiety. A tidy and organized home can create a calming environment that promotes relaxation and peace of mind.
Enhanced Focus: A clutter-free space allows you to concentrate better on your work or daily activities. It minimizes distractions and helps you stay on task.

Increased Creativity: A well-organized and aesthetically pleasing space can stimulate your creativity and inspire you to think more creatively.
Healthier Living: An organized home is easier to clean and maintain. It reduces the accumulation of dust, allergens, and pests, leading to a healthier living environment.
Better Time Management: When your home is organized, you can plan and manage your time more effectively. It can help you establish routines and stick to schedules. And you get out the door faster.... a "must" for anyone with school-age kids.

Improved Relationships: An organized home can lead to less stress and tension within your household. It fosters a sense of order and cooperation among family members.
Financial Benefits: Organizing your home often involves decluttering, which can help you identify items you no longer need. Selling or donating these items can provide you with extra income or tax deductions.
Enhanced Safety: An organized home reduces the risk of accidents and injuries. It ensures that hazardous materials, sharp objects, and tripping hazards are properly stored or removed. My mom just had a knee surgery and it was so nice to have her stay with us and know she maneuver the house with ease.
Personal Satisfaction: Achieving and maintaining an organized home can boost your self-esteem and sense of accomplishment. It provides a feeling of control and mastery over your environment.
Easier Decision-Making: When your belongings are well-organized, it's easier to make decisions about what to keep, what to discard, and what to acquire. This can extend to various aspects of your life.
Aesthetic Pleasure: An organized home can be visually appealing. It allows you to showcase your personal style and decor choices, making your space more inviting and enjoyable. Plus it can be a place you enjoy looking at too (isn't that what's most important?)

Guest Comfort: An organized home is more welcoming to guests. It can improve their experience when visiting and create a positive impression.
Adaptability: An organized home is more adaptable to changing circumstances. Whether you're welcoming a new family member, accommodating a home office, or downsizing, an organized space can be easier to adjust.
Sustainability: By organizing your home, you can adopt more sustainable practices. You're less likely to buy unnecessary items, and you can recycle or donate items you no longer need.
Overall, organizing your home can lead to a more comfortable, functional, and harmonious living environment, positively impacting your physical and mental well-being. It's a no-brainer investment in your quality of life and the well-being of your household.
How to Start Organizing
The hardest part of any big life change is getting started. How do you get the balling rolling when it all feels so HEAVY?
Here are two strategies to try:
Set a timer for 15 minutes and start throwing away trash and putting like items together (ie in the closet sort clothes into categories like pants, shirts, sweaters, etc). Once the timer is up, you can keep going or give yourself a break until tomorrow (or your next scheduled session)
Pick a number of things to declutter from the space. For example, I had a BIG pile of stuff in my basement. For months I would just dump everything down there - stuff I didn't want, donations, too-small kids clothes, outgrown toys. I got the ball rolling by going down and just deciding on five things (toss, keep, donate, store here or there) in the space for days in a row. After the five days, I felt less overwhelmed and more in control down of the area which helped me come up with the next best steps to tackle it.

There is no perfect time to get organized. Don't wait for winter when there's nothing to do. Or the January because it's the new year. Or summer when the kids are out of school. The perfect time is NOW.
